Constructed in 1999 by Lin Li as part of the public art upgrade, this sculpture incorporates the 5 elements of Chinese philosophy – wood, water, earth, fire and gold (metal) together with native Australian yellow box. Not only does it mark the entrance to symbolic Chinatown, but this work of art also represents the influence of Chinese culture within that of an Australian environment, signifying harmony. 23 carat gold leaf applied over fibreglass on parts of the tree.
